Private Equity in Alberta: AIMCo Tops $200B as Mawer and Brookfield Expand

For years, Calgary’s finance talent conversation has been dominated by energy. Oil and gas built this city, and the finance professionals who grew up in that world learned to manage capital through cycles of boom and bust. But quietly, and then not so quietly, a different kind of capital has been building in Alberta. Private capital.

Three headlines from the past few months tell the story better than any long-form analysis could.

AIMCo surpassed “$200 billion in assets under management” as of June 30, reaching $210.7 billion, up from $194.7 billion at the end of 2025, with a 7.1% net investment return in the first half of the year. Mawer launched a new private equity fund, expanding access to registered accounts and bringing its established private equity strategy directly into its discretionary platform with a minimum investment of just $25,000. And Brookfield agreed to acquire Edmonton’s Gregg Distributors for $1.6 billion, one of the largest private equity transactions in Western Canada this year.

This isn’t a blip. It’s a structural shift, and it’s reshaping what finance talent in Calgary needs to look like.

What’s Actually Driving the Growth

Alberta has always had capital. What’s changing is who controls it and how it’s deployed.

AIMCo’s scale is now institutional-grade. At over $210 billion, AIMCo is no longer a regional pension manager. It competes with the largest institutional investors in the world for deals, talent, and returns. That scale creates demand for professionals who understand complex portfolio structures, fund reporting, and institutional-grade governance.

Mawer’s move signals democratization. By launching a private equity fund accessible through registered accounts, Mawer is bringing a traditionally institutional asset class to individual investors. That expansion requires fund accountants, investor relations professionals, and reporting specialists who understand the regulatory and operational complexity that comes with retail capital.

Brookfield’s Gregg acquisition is a template. Brookfield didn’t just buy a company, it bought a platform. Gregg Distributors is a leading industrial maintenance, repair, and operations supplier serving Western Canada’s energy and industrial markets. The deal, which values the company at approximately $1.6 billion, signals that private equity sees durable value in Alberta’s industrial and energy service ecosystem.

What This Means for Finance Talent Demand

The growth of private capital in Alberta is creating a specific and growing demand for two categories of finance professionals: fund accountants and asset management specialists.

Fund accounting is a niche discipline. It’s not the same as corporate accounting. Fund accountants work with complex ownership structures, limited partnerships, trusts, and investment vehicles , and are responsible for calculating net asset value, managing capital calls and distributions, preparing investor reporting, and ensuring compliance with Limited Partnership Agreements. It requires a different muscle than closing the books at an operating company.

Asset management finance sits at the intersection of investment operations and reporting. Professionals in this space support portfolio analytics, performance reporting, investor relations, and regulatory compliance. They need to understand how investments are structured, how returns are calculated, and how to communicate results to sophisticated investors.

AIMCo is already hiring in Calgary for private equity associates and investment professionals. PillarFour Capital Partners is recruiting for a private equity analyst role in Calgary. BMO Capital Partners is seeking a Director with seven-plus years of experience in investment banking or private equity. And that’s just what’s publicly posted.

The demand isn’t just at the investment level. It’s at the operational level, the fund controllers, the reporting managers, the investor relations specialists, and the finance leaders who make the investment engine run.

The Calgary Opportunity

For finance professionals in Calgary, this represents a genuine career pivot point.

If you’ve spent your career in corporate accounting, closing the books at an operating company, managing an audit, leading a finance team, the skills you’ve built are transferable. But the context is different. Fund accounting and asset management finance require a comfort with complexity, a tolerance for ambiguity, and an ability to work with structures that don’t follow a standard corporate chart of accounts.

The professionals who are moving into these roles are the ones who invested in understanding investment structures, who learned how fund reporting works, and who positioned themselves as candidates who could bridge the gap between traditional finance and the investment world.

What Employers Should Be Thinking About

If you’re a private equity firm, an asset manager, or an investment fund growing your Calgary presence, the talent competition is real, and it’s not just against other investment firms.

You’re competing against energy companies, professional services firms, and the broader finance market for the same pool of talented CPAs. The professionals who understand fund structures are in high demand and short supply.

That means compensation needs to be competitive. It means career development needs to be real. And it means the pitch needs to go beyond the role, it needs to speak to the trajectory of private capital in Alberta and what it means to be part of it.

The Bottom Line

AIMCo’s $200 billion milestone, Mawer’s private equity fund launch, and Brookfield’s $1.6 billion acquisition are not isolated events. They’re signposts on a path that Alberta has been walking for years, the path toward a more diversified, more sophisticated capital market.

For finance professionals, the message is clear: the skills that got you here are valuable, but the skills that will get you where you want to go may look different. Fund accounting, asset management finance, and investment operations expertise are becoming the new frontier in Calgary’s finance market.

At BullsEye Recruitment, we’re seeing increased demand for professionals who understand these structures. If you’re building a finance team in the investment space, or if you’re a finance professional exploring what’s next, we’d love to connect.
