What Alberta’s Latest Labour Market Trends Mean for Finance Hiring in Calgary

“The numbers suggest hiring should be getting easier. That’s not what we’re seeing.”

Every month, labour market reports arrive packed with statistics—employment gains, unemployment rates, wage growth, labour participation. They provide an excellent snapshot of Alberta’s economy, but they don’t always tell the whole story.

At BullsEye Recruitment, we spend our days speaking with CFOs, Controllers, Partners, Finance Directors, and senior accounting professionals across Calgary. Interestingly, those conversations paint a slightly different picture than the headlines.

Yes, Alberta’s labour market remains healthy.

No, finding experienced finance talent hasn’t suddenly become easier.

In fact, for many Calgary employers, the challenge has simply evolved.

The Labour Market Is Growing…But So Are Expectations

According to the latest Alberta Labour Market Notes and Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, Alberta continues to lead much of the country in employment growth.

Employment has increased by approximately 4% over the past year, participation rates remain among the highest in Canada, and wage growth continues to outpace inflation in several occupations. Calgary also continues attracting investment across energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, professional services, and technology—creating steady demand for experienced business professionals.

On paper, these are encouraging signs.

But hiring isn’t happening on paper.

It’s happening in boardrooms, finance departments, and conversations between employers and professionals who are carefully evaluating what comes next.

One Observation We’ve Heard Repeatedly This Summer

Over the past several weeks, we’ve noticed one common theme emerging from conversations with hiring managers.

“We’re getting applicants…we’re just not getting the applicants we’re hoping for.”

That’s a very different problem than having no applicants at all.

Organizations continue receiving resumes.

What remains difficult is finding professionals who combine:

  • technical accounting expertise;
  • commercial business judgment;
  • leadership capability;
  • ERP experience;
  • communication skills;
  • and the ability to influence operational decisions.

Those individuals remain highly employable—and they know it.

The Best Candidates Usually Aren’t Looking

This is perhaps the biggest misconception we encounter.

A stronger labour market doesn’t necessarily create an abundance of senior finance talent.

Most experienced Controllers, Directors of Finance, Finance Managers, and CPAs are already employed.

They’re succeeding in their current organizations.

They’re earning competitive compensation.

They’re being recognized for their contributions.

If they choose to explore another opportunity, it’s rarely because they’re unemployed.

It’s because they’re searching for something better.

That distinction changes how successful organizations approach recruitment.

Hiring Has Become More Strategic Than Transactional

Five years ago, many organizations focused primarily on technical capability.

Today, the conversations sound different.

Clients increasingly ask us questions like:

“Can they partner with operations?”

“Can they improve our reporting?”

“Will they challenge our thinking?”

“Can they help modernize our finance function?”

Technical accounting skills remain essential.

But leadership, communication, adaptability, and business partnership have become equally important—particularly within Calgary’s mid-market organizations.

Stampede Week Offers More Than Networking

This week, much of Calgary is gathered at Stampede breakfasts, client events, charity functions, and community celebrations.

From the outside, it looks like a week away from business.

In reality, many important business conversations happen during Stampede.

We’ve seen introductions made over coffee become hiring projects three months later.

We’ve watched former colleagues reconnect and eventually join the same executive team.

We’ve seen succession planning conversations begin long before a formal job description was ever written.

Relationships have always mattered in Calgary’s business community.

Stampede simply reminds us how valuable those relationships continue to be.

What We Expect Through the Rest of 2026

Based on what we’re hearing across Calgary, we believe several trends will continue shaping finance hiring over the coming months.

Organizations will continue investing in experienced finance leadership rather than expanding headcount broadly.

AI, automation, ERP optimization, and business transformation projects will increase demand for professionals who can bridge finance and operations.

Hiring decisions may take longer—but they’ll become even more deliberate.

And perhaps most importantly, employers who build relationships before they have an immediate vacancy will continue outperforming those who begin recruiting only after someone resigns.

A Final Thought

Labour market reports are valuable.

They help explain where Alberta has been.

The conversations we’re having every day help us understand where Calgary is going.

Right now, we’re optimistic.

The market isn’t slowing—it is becoming more selective.

For employers, that means investing in hiring strategies before urgency takes over.

For senior accounting and finance professionals, it means recognizing that some of the best opportunities may never reach a public job board.

At BullsEye Recruitment, we’re encouraged by the quality of conversations we’re having with both clients and candidates. The second half of 2026 is shaping up to be one of thoughtful hiring, strategic growth, and continued investment in experienced finance leadership across Calgary.

If your organization is planning its next finance hire—or you’re considering your own next career move—we’d welcome the opportunity for a confidential conversation.
